One of the great features of todays Smart Cameras is smart notifications like person detection. Many cameras today have the ability to alert you if it detects a person, package, pet, and certain noises like crying, a person talking or a dog barking.
This ability to get specific notifications allows us to create our own do it yourself Home Security System. You can monitor and secure your home from anywhere.
Let’s take a look at a simple Practical Home Security Routine below for Person Detection.
Person Detection Automated Routine / Notifications
The following routine will alert you if a person is detected on your camera and announce audibly on your device of choice such as your Voice Assistant.
Most of the popular Smart Cameras today have smart notifications such as person detection. Some may require a subscription to receive smart alerts.
If your camera doesn’t have the person detection option or you are not paying for the service, that’s okay. You can still use this routine with just motion detection announcements.
Link your devices to allow data sharing, such as enabling the device skill in the ALEXA App.
The Person Detection Security Routine below uses a WYZE Cam and an Amazon Echo.
Step 1
Open Routines in the ALEXA App and click the + symbol to add a new routine. You will get the following page below.
Step 2
Enter a name for the routine. In this example we have called it Person Detected.
Step 3
Now select the “When this happens” text and choose the Smart Home Option. Next select the camera you will be using. In the images below you can see I chose the Wyze Outdoor Cam.
After you select the Wyze Cam, you will get the capability confirmations as shown in the next two images below.
Just select them and then save.
Step 4
Now you must complete the last step in this Person Detection Security Routine.
Add the action to be triggered when a person is detected.
First select the add action step and choose Send Announcement. Then you will enter the text of what you want the announcement to say.
You can see in the images below, we chose the Announcement to be “Person Detected in Driveway”.
Then you must select the device or devices in which you want to hear the announcement from. You can select all of your devices or a specific one.
After that you will confirm what Alexa will announce and on what device it will play on.
